For competitive shooters such as Counter-Strike 2, Valorant, Overwatch 2, or Fortnite, a high-refresh 1080p or 1440p display makes more sense than spending heavily on 4K image quality. A 240Hz monitor is wasted if the PC spends most of the session at 90 FPS.
That doesn't mean every frame must equal the monitor's maximum refresh rate. Variable refresh technologies help enormously. It does mean you should understand where your performance actually lands before paying for a premium panel.
Windows 11 also brings useful gaming-specific features. Game Mode can be enabled under Settings > Gaming > Game Mode, while Graphics settings include options such as hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling and optimizations for windowed games. Pick the monitor before decorating the desk
Your monitor determines more of the setup's character than almost anything else.
For many players, 27-inch 1440p at 240Hz is a remarkably versatile target in 2026. It gives you considerably more workspace and image sharpness than 1080p without requiring the GPU burden of 4K.
OLED has also become far more compelling. Connection standards matter too. DisplayPort 2.1 supports UHBR20 with up to 80 Gbps of link bandwidth, and VESA recommends certified DP80 cables for full UHBR20 performance.
That last part gets ignored constantly.
A premium monitor plus an unsuitable cable is an annoying way to discover that “supports 4K high refresh” has several asterisks attached.

Don't build a shopping cart just because an accessory appears on every gaming desk photograph.
Start with the mouse.
